We have a motor home that had a flat table between the driver's and passenger's seats. It was one of those fine ideas as long as the motor home wasn't moving; once it was, the table was utterly useless. You couldn't put anything on it because it would fall off the minute you changed lanes. This table has a lip that may not stop everything from heading off the side, but it does keep most things on it and not over it. Also, and this was the primary reason I got it. the motor home's driver's side has a cup holder, but it's against the left side of the cub - completely awkward for right-handed drivers. . This table has cupholders on the right side for the driver and the unused holders are put to other uses. All in all, there is now plenty of space for the what not we like to have handy.
